Works with Spotify
Build pages on Spotify's catalog — search artists, albums and tracks, show album art, list an artist's top tracks — with your own Spotify app credentials.
What you can build
Pages that put music front and centre: an album art wall for an artist, a party board where friends search songs and vote on what plays next, a record club that rates an album a week, a page of an artist's top tracks. Everyone who opens the app searches the same full catalog, and what they pick and rate lives in your app.
How it connects
Your own Spotify app credentials, saved on your app. You register an app
once in the Spotify developer dashboard and save its Client ID and Client
secret on your app's Settings → Secrets as SPOTIFY_CLIENT_ID and
SPOTIFY_CLIENT_SECRET. Your backend.js trades them for a short-lived token,
keeps it in memory, and makes every Spotify call, so neither secret reaches the
page. Until both are in, your app shows you a Setup screen with the steps,
and search opens the moment they are saved.
Every visitor reads Spotify's public catalog through your credentials — the shape for "let people search Spotify from my page".
What it can read and do
| Your app can read | Your app can do |
|---|---|
| Search across tracks, artists, albums and playlists | Show album art, sized for the spot it fills |
| An artist, their albums and their top tracks | Keep picks, lists, votes and ratings in your app |
| An album and its tracks, a track, public playlists and their tracks | Link each item to open in Spotify |
Starter prompts
- Build an album art wall: search Spotify for an artist and show every album cover in a grid.
- Make a party playlist board where friends search Spotify for songs, add them to our list, and vote on what plays next.
- Make a record club page where each member picks an album from Spotify every week and everyone rates it.
Good to know
- The catalog is the whole of it. A listener's own top tracks, saved songs, private playlists and playback belong to their Spotify account; build on the public catalog and keep the group's picks in your app.
- No match is an answer. An empty search keeps the words on screen so the person can try another spelling.
- Pick a market for artist top tracks and albums, so each item comes back playable where your visitors are.
